My husband and I are retired City Utilities employees, and we watched the May 20 City Council meeting with great interest. We retired in 2011 with a combined total of 70 years of service to the city, and we were very proud to serve.
The presentation made by John Crawford was very disturbing and it was obvious to us, as I am sure it was to all long-time city employees, that the “facts” in Crawford’s presentation were not only inaccurate but very misleading.
Workers are not fighting for just fair wages, they are fighting to keep the jobs they have dedicated themselves to, often at lower wages than they could make in the public sector. They are fighting to keep their jobs from the whims of any new, and usually inexperienced, administrator or supervisor.
Union workers keep this city working smoothly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Give these dedicated union employees the respect they have earned and deserve by giving them a voice at the negotiating table.
Shame on Crawford for spreading this cancer of fear through our community.
